About us

About usTourism Institute of East Africa is an institution of higher learning  aimed at meeting the dynamic needs of the Tourism Industry which is the fastest growing industry in the world. We train students who have not been to the field of Tourism and we have comprehensive programs for those who are already in the field. We equip learners with practical, relevant and professional skills that are applicable in the industry. The training targets: Entry Level Staff, Middle-Management Personnel, Top Management, Entrepreneurs, researchers among others. We carry out research to identify gaps in the industry and come up with recommendations and solutions. Our professional team of lecturers is both academicians and practitioners in the industry. The goodwill and partnership the institute has with other institutions open doors of employment opportunities for graduates from the institute. The family atmosphere created at the institute and conducive learning environment enables students to desire to learn and participate in the development of good practice in the tourism & hospitality industry. Our training model is NOT theoretical and memorization rather, we train our students to understand concepts and new ideas through critical thinking.

We offer Diploma, Certificate programs, and Short Courses. The Diploma programs take two (2) Academic Years. Each Academic Year has two (2) Semesters. Each Semester lasts for 13 weeks with 4 weeks of holiday. Certificate Programs go for two (2) semesters ( one Academic Year). After the total four (4) semesters for Diploma programs or 2 Semesters for Certificate programs, students do an internship of a minimum of 3 months. Students are given an opportunity to get their internship place but once they fail, then TIEA connects them to any of the partners that range from 5-star hotels in the region, Tour Companies, Travel Agencies, Tourism Establishments, Airlines, Airport among others.

Work-Applied Learning (WAL)

The traditional education system confines students in classrooms. Armed with theories of management, graduates then enter the world of work with no practical skills whatsoever. It is not always a happy transition. New employees soon find that reality looks rather different from what they had been led to expect with their theoretical classes. Employers still complain that graduates in tourism and other sectors are ill-equipped for work. Our Work Applied Learning approach equips students with both theories and PRACTICALS.  Instead of treating learning and working as separate pursuits, WAL brings them together. Theory and practice go hand in hand. With WAL, assignments undertaken for qualification should test knowledge about both realms. Students are encouraged to tackle the ‘real world’ problems.

This kind of environment offers the best of both worlds. And it is certainly not a passive process. Students should know more about their own workplace than anyone else in their learning situation. These are all good reasons why WAL is worth knowing. TIEA will not only introduce you to this approach but will set you well on the way to becoming a more effective skilled worker. This is business education at its best.

Character Traits Appraisal (CTA)

Whereas schools, tertiary institutions, and universities focus their a lot of their efforts on students getting good grades. In the real world, employers' number NEED is NOT graded. Tourism Institute of East Africa through rigorous research has discovered that CHARACTER is what one employs followed by SKILLS and least but not last-PERFORMANCE (grades). Character Traits Appraisal is a tool used to measure students' attributes. At TIEA, students' are appraised at the end of the semester and the results are recorded on their transcript. We strongly believe, it is one's Character that keeps them at their job and society and NOT necessarily the GRADES they attained, although Grades are good they are not good enough to keep one at a job if their Character is in want.
